Sakat Chauth (also called Tilkuta Chaturthi or Sankashti Chaturthi of Magha month) is one of the most important Ganesha fasts of the year, observed on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Magha month (January/February). Mothers observe this fast primarily for the long life, health, and protection of their children. The fast is broken only after sighting the moon at night. Til (sesame) and jaggery sweets are the traditional offerings.

Procedure

Observe complete fast from sunrise. Worship Lord Ganesha with durva grass, modak, and til-gur (sesame-jaggery) sweets. Chant Ganesh mantra and read Sakat Chauth Vrat Katha. Prepare til-gur ladoo as prasad. At night, sight the moon and then perform Ganesha aarti. Break fast after moon darshan.
