Methodology, classical references
Sources & Classical References
Every prediction page on VedicBirth is grounded in one or more classical Vedic astrology texts. We do not generate astrological claims from contemporary opinion; we cite, cross-reference, and apply the rules as set down in the source treatises listed below.
Chart positions are computed independently using Lahiri ayanamsha and the Swiss Ephemeris (build 2.10+). Where classical texts disagree on a rule, we present the most widely accepted interpretation as primary and note the variants. All pages display a "Last reviewed" date showing when the page's claims were last cross-checked against these sources.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS)
Scope: Foundational text covering 71 chapters: planetary nature, signs, houses, yogas (Raja, Dhana, Arishta, Pancha Mahapurusha), Vimshottari and other dasha systems, transit principles, predictive techniques.
How we use it: BPHS underpins our yoga formation rules, dasha lord assignments, house-significations, and dignity calculations. Every yoga-x-lagna page on this site cites BPHS as the structural reference. The Vimshottari proportions used on every dasha pair page derive directly from BPHS Adhyaya 46-49.
Phaladeepika
Scope: 28 chapters of predictive Vedic astrology emphasizing antardasha (sub-period) results, planet-in-house effects, and predictive timing.
How we use it: Phaladeepika is the primary source for our dasha-antardasha pages. The 81 MD-AD pair narratives are grounded in Phaladeepika chapters on antardasha results, supplemented with planetary friendship calculations from BPHS.
Saravali
Scope: 54 chapters covering planet-in-sign, planet-in-house, yogas, and predictive principles. Saravali is one of the oldest extant Vedic astrology compendia.
How we use it: Saravali cross-references BPHS yoga rules and provides supplementary detail on planet-in-sign behavior. Used to validate yoga formations and dignity assessments. Cited on planet-in-sign-in-house pages and on yoga pages where Saravali offers an alternate or complementary formation rule.
Hora Sara
Scope: Earliest classical text on house effects. 26 chapters focused on predictive interpretation of houses, lords, and transits.
How we use it: Hora Sara grounds our house-effect descriptions on planet-in-sign-in-house pages. Where BPHS, Saravali, and Hora Sara differ, we present the BPHS interpretation as primary and note the variant readings.
Computational methodology
- · Ayanamsha: Lahiri (Citra Paksha), the most widely used in classical Indian astrology.
- · Ephemeris: Swiss Ephemeris, the highest-precision open-source planetary ephemeris available, derived from JPL DE431.
- · House system: Whole-sign houses (per BPHS), the classical approach.
- · Aspects: Special Vedic aspects (Mars: 4, 8; Jupiter: 5, 9; Saturn: 3, 10) plus the standard 7th aspect for all planets.
- · Dasha: Vimshottari, with proportional MD-AD calculation per BPHS Adhyaya 46.
Editorial review
Every programmatic page on VedicBirth is reviewed against the sources listed above. The "Last reviewed" date on each page reflects the most recent cross-check of the page's claims against the source texts. Prediction pages are not generated freeform; they apply documented classical rules to the specific planet, sign, house, lagna, or dasha permutation the page covers.
Where source texts are silent on a specific permutation, the page surfaces only the structural inferences the rule allows (house lordship, dignity, friendship), and explicitly avoids claims that go beyond what the texts support.
