Monthly Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast

Ekadashi Vrat

Deity Lord Vishnu
Type Monthly Fasts

Ekadashi Vrat is observed on the 11th day (Ekadashi) of both the waxing (Shukla) and waning (Krishna) lunar fortnights — making it a twice-monthly fast. It is considered the most important of all Vaishnava vrats. Fasting on Ekadashi and remaining awake through the night (Jagaran) while chanting Vishnu's names earns immense spiritual merit and removes sins accumulated over multiple lifetimes.

Benefits

Removes sins of multiple lifetimes, ensures liberation (moksha), bestows Lord Vishnu's blessings, improves health through fasting, and ensures spiritual progress.

Procedure

Begin Dashami (10th) evening by eating sattvik food. On Ekadashi, wake before sunrise. Bathe and worship Vishnu. Keep nirjala (waterless) or phalahar (fruit-only) fast. Chant Vishnu Sahasranama or Hare Krishna mantra. Stay awake at night. Break fast on Dwadashi after sunrise.

When to Observe

24 times per year — 11th day of both Shukla and Krishna Paksha each month. Special Ekadashis: Nirjala, Mokshada, Devuthani, Putrada, Vaikunta.

Fasting Rules

Avoid rice, wheat, lentils, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Nirjala (complete waterless fast) gives maximum merit. Phalahar (fruits, milk, nuts) is also acceptable.

How to Break the Fast

Break fast on Dwadashi after sunrise by offering water to Tulsi plant, worshipping Vishnu briefly, then consuming prasad. First eat a Dwadashi-appropriate food like amla or sesame.
