Monthly Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast
Amavasya Vrat
Amavasya Vrat is observed on the new moon day (Amavasya) of every lunar month. It is the most sacred day for Pitru Puja (ancestral worship) and Shradh rites. The absence of moonlight is said to make the veil between the living and the departed thin, making it an ideal time for tarpan (water libations) to ancestors. Bathing in holy rivers on Amavasya washes away sins and earns merit for the entire lineage.
