Mysore Dasara
Mysore Dasara is one of the most spectacular festivals in India, declared the State Festival of Karnataka. Celebrated over ten days culminating on Vijayadashami, it honors Goddess Chamundeshwari's (Durga's) victory over the demon Mahishasura — after whom Mysore (Mahisuru) is named. The highlight is the grand Jamboo Savari procession on Vijayadashami, where a golden idol of Chamundeshwari is carried atop a magnificently decorated elephant through Mysore's streets. The Mysore Palace is lit with nearly 100,000 bulbs throughout the festival, creating a breathtaking spectacle.
