Narmada Jayanti
Narmada Jayanti celebrates the birth anniversary of the sacred River Narmada — considered the daughter of Lord Shiva and one of the holiest rivers in India. According to legend, the Narmada was born from Shiva's sweat as he performed intense penance, and she is unique among Indian rivers in being circumambulated (Narmada Parikrama) rather than merely bathed in. On this day, the banks of the Narmada from Amarkantak (its source in Madhya Pradesh) to Bharuch (its mouth in Gujarat) are thronged with devotees performing rituals, offering prayers, and taking a holy dip.

Significance
Narmada is said to purify even by sight alone — unlike other sacred rivers which purify by bathing. Circumambulating the entire Narmada (a 2,600 km journey) is one of Hinduism's most arduous and meritorious pilgrimages. Worshipping Narmada Devi on her Jayanti bestows health, longevity, and liberation from sins.
Rituals & Traditions
Take a holy dip in the Narmada at sunrise. Offer flowers, kumkum, and turmeric to the river. Perform Narmada Aarti at the ghats. Chant Narmadashtak (eight-verse hymn). Undertake a portion of Narmada Parikrama if possible. Feed Brahmins and the poor. Light diyas along the riverbank at dusk.
