Sheetala Saptami

Deity Goddess Sheetala
Month Chaitra Krishna Saptami / Ashtami (March/April — the week after Holi)
Region Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab

Sheetala Saptami (also called Sheetala Ashtami or Basoda) is observed on the seventh or eighth day of the dark fortnight of Chaitra, about a week after Holi. It is dedicated to Goddess Sheetala (the Cool One) — the deity who protects against smallpox, chickenpox, measles, and fever. On this day, no fire is lit in the house; all food is cooked a day before and eaten cold (Basoda). The ritual reflects ancient public health wisdom — eating cold, previously cooked food reduces transmission of fire-borne infections and honors the cooling goddess.
