Skanda Sashti
Skanda Sashti is a six-day festival celebrated in honor of Lord Murugan (Skanda/Kartikeya), the son of Shiva and Parvati and the commander of the divine army. It commemorates his victory over the demon Surapadman over six days of battle, culminating on the sixth day (Sashti) when Murugan slays the demon with his divine Vel (spear). The festival is most grandly observed in Tamil Nadu and among Tamil communities worldwide. Devotees observe a six-day fast (Kavadi fast), some performing acts of penance and carrying the ceremonial Kavadi in procession.
