Ekadashi Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast

Jaya Ekadashi Vrat

Deity Lord Vishnu
Type Ekadashi Fasts

Jaya Ekadashi falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Magh month (January–February). It is believed to liberate souls trapped in ghostly existence (Preta Yoni) and grant them moksha. The name "Jaya" means victory, and observing this fast bestows victory over sins and the cycle of birth and death. Lord Vishnu is worshipped in his form as the remover of all sins.

Benefits

Liberates ancestors trapped in ghostly form, grants moksha, bestows victory over enemies and obstacles, removes sins of all lifetimes, and ensures divine protection of Lord Vishnu.

Procedure

On Dashami evening eat sattvik food and resolve to fast. Wake before sunrise on Ekadashi, bathe and wear clean clothes. Install Vishnu idol or image. Offer tulsi, flowers, incense, and ghee lamp. Recite Vishnu Sahasranama and Jaya Ekadashi Katha. Stay awake through the night chanting Hari's names. Complete puja on Dwadashi morning and break fast.

When to Observe

Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Magh month (January–February). Falls once per year during the auspicious Magh month when holy dips at Prayagraj are also especially meritorious.

Fasting Rules

Complete fast from grains, lentils, onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian food. Nirjala (waterless) fast gives maximum merit. Phalahar — fruits, milk, nuts, and sendha namak — is acceptable for those unable to do nirjala.

How to Break the Fast

Break fast on Dwadashi morning after sunrise. Offer water to Tulsi plant, perform brief Vishnu puja, and eat prasad. Begin with a light sattvik meal — fruits or milk-based sweets.
