Monthly Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast

Panchami Vrat

Deity Goddess Saraswati / Skanda (Kartikeya) / Naga Devatas
Type Monthly Fasts

Panchami Vrat is observed on the 5th tithi of both fortnights each month and is associated with multiple deities depending on the season and tradition. The 5th tithi is ruled by the Naga (serpent) deities, making Panchami the sacred day for Naga worship across India — Nag Panchami, the most famous observance, falls on Shravana Shukla Panchami when serpents are worshipped to ward off snake-bite and receive the blessings of Shiva who wears the Naga. Goddess Saraswati — deity of knowledge, arts, and learning — is also closely associated with Panchami, and Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami) is her grandest annual festival. The warrior god Skanda (Kartikeya), born on Panchami, is worshipped on this tithi for courage, victory, and removal of evil. The Shukla Panchami of each month is considered especially potent for invoking all three of these energies.

Benefits

Nag Panchami observance protects the family from snake-bite, removes the Kaal Sarp Dosha from the horoscope, and placates the serpent ancestors (Naga pitrus). Saraswati worship on Panchami sharpens intellect, grants mastery over arts and languages, and blesses students with academic success. Skanda worship brings victory over enemies, courage in adversity, and purification of the body and mind. In general, Panchami Vrat removes the malefic effects of Rahu and Ketu (the serpent nodes of the Moon) in the birth chart.

Procedure

On Shukla Panchami, perform Saraswati puja — place books, instruments, and tools of your craft near her image. Offer yellow flowers, yellow sweets (kesari halwa), white sandalwood paste, and a pen or writing instrument. Recite Saraswati Vandana or the Saraswati Ashtakam. On Nag Panchami (Shravana Shukla Panchami), worship snake images with milk, flowers, and turmeric; do not dig the earth, harm snakes, or use sharp instruments on this day. Offer milk at ant-hills (believed to be abodes of Nagas). For Skanda Panchami, offer red flowers and fruits to Kartikeya.

When to Observe

Twice every month — Shukla Paksha Panchami and Krishna Paksha Panchami. The most important are: Vasant Panchami (Magha Shukla Panchami) for Saraswati, Nag Panchami (Shravana Shukla Panchami) for Naga worship, Skanda Panchami (Margashirsha Shukla) for Kartikeya, and Shri Panchami. The Shukla Panchami of each month is generally considered more auspicious than the Krishna Panchami for worship and new beginnings.

Fasting Rules

Observe a phalahar fast from sunrise to sunset. Avoid grains, rice is specifically avoided on Nag Panchami in many traditions, as well as lentils, non-vegetarian food, onion, and garlic. On Nag Panchami specifically, avoid frying food as the sizzling sound is believed to disturb the Nagas. Milk and milk-based products are especially encouraged as they are offered to the Nagas. Vasant Panchami fasting rules are milder — many simply avoid tamasic food and pray to Saraswati without a strict fast.

How to Break the Fast

Break the fast after sunset puja. On Saraswati Panchami, offer yellow sweets and fruits to the deity, then eat a sattvic meal — yellow rice (kesari bhat) or khichdi is auspicious. On Nag Panchami, break the fast with milk, curd, and sweet rice pudding (kheer) as these are the foods most pleasing to the Nagas. Distribute prasad — particularly milk sweets — to neighbors and children after the puja is complete.
