Goddess Worship — Vedic Puja Vidhi

Ashtalakshmi Puja

Deity Ashtalakshmi (Eight Forms of Goddess Lakshmi)
Duration 1–2 hours
Category Goddess Worship

Ashtalakshmi Puja is the worship of the eight principal manifestations of Goddess Lakshmi, each presiding over a distinct domain of abundance and well-being. The eight forms are: Adi Lakshmi (the primordial, eternal form), Dhana Lakshmi (goddess of monetary wealth), Dhanya Lakshmi (goddess of agricultural prosperity and grain), Gaja Lakshmi (flanked by elephants, goddess of royal power and sovereignty), Santana Lakshmi (goddess of progeny and lineage), Veera Lakshmi (goddess of courage and valor), Vijaya Lakshmi (goddess of victory in all endeavors), and Vidya Lakshmi (goddess of knowledge and wisdom). Together, the Ashtalakshmi represent the complete vision of prosperity — not merely financial wealth but the full flowering of a human life in all its dimensions.

Benefits

Ashtalakshmi Puja simultaneously invokes blessings across all eight domains of prosperity. Worshippers receive abundant wealth and financial stability (Dhana Lakshmi), food security and agricultural success (Dhanya Lakshmi), royal grace and leadership power (Gaja Lakshmi), blessings of children and a flourishing lineage (Santana Lakshmi), courage to overcome obstacles (Veera Lakshmi), victory in competitions and endeavors (Vijaya Lakshmi), sharp intellect and academic success (Vidya Lakshmi), and the root grace of the primordial goddess (Adi Lakshmi). Business owners, students, newly married couples, and anyone seeking comprehensive life prosperity perform this puja.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Ashtalakshmi puja is ideally performed on a Friday, Thursday, or during Navratri and Diwali. Set up a clean altar with a yellow or red cloth. Place images or a combined Ashtalakshmi yantra at the centre. Light a ghee deepak and incense. Perform a formal Shodashopachara (sixteen-step) puja: invocation, offering of seat, water for feet, water for hands, water to sip, bath (abhishek with panchamrit), clothing, sacred thread, sandalwood, flowers, incense, lamp, naivedyam, tambula (betel), and aarti. During the flower offering, recite the name and attribute of each Lakshmi as you offer a separate flower: "Adi Lakshmyai Namah, Dhana Lakshmyai Namah..." Recite the Ashtalakshmi Stotra. Offer lotus flowers, yellow marigolds, turmeric, kumkum, and gold-coloured cloth. Conclude with Lakshmi aarti and distribute prasad of kheer (rice pudding) or sweet pongal.

Best Time (Muhurat)

Diwali — particularly the evening of Lakshmi Puja on the main Diwali night (Amavasya of Kartika month) — is the supreme occasion for Ashtalakshmi puja. Fridays throughout the year are auspicious, especially the Fridays of the Shukla (waxing moon) fortnight. Sharad Navratri is another major occasion. Akshaya Tritiya (third day of the waxing moon in Vaishakha) is considered the best day of the year for wealth-related Lakshmi worship.
