What is Rajju Porutham?
Rajju Porutham is the most critical porutham in South Indian tradition. Rajju means "rope" and represents the bond of marriage. Nakshatras are grouped into 5 rajju categories: Siro (head), Kanta (neck), Udara (stomach), Kati (waist), and Pada (feet). If both partners have nakshatras in the same rajju, the marriage is cautioned - the specific rajju determines which life area faces difficulty.
How to Calculate
The 27 nakshatras are divided into 5 groups (rajju). Siro Rajju: Mrigashira, Chitra, Dhanishtha. Kanta Rajju: Rohini, Hasta, Shravana. Udara Rajju: Krittika, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha. Kati Rajju: Bharani, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha. Pada Rajju: Ashwini, Magha, Moola. If bride and groom are in the same rajju group, Rajju Porutham is absent. Same Siro = health risk for husband. Same Kanta = risk for wife. Same Udara = children risk. Same Kati = poverty risk. Same Pada = wandering/instability.
FAQ
Q.Can we marry without Rajju Porutham?
Most South Indian astrologers strongly discourage marriage without Rajju Porutham. It is the single most important porutham. However, some practitioners accept the match if: (a) the overall Ashtakoot score is very high (28+/36), (b) Jupiter aspects the 7th house in both charts, (c) specific remedial pujas are performed before marriage.
Q.Is Rajju Porutham unique to South Indian astrology?
Yes, Rajju Porutham is specifically a South Indian (Dravida) concept not found in the North Indian Ashtakoot system. It is based on the Tara-bala concept but applied differently. North Indian matching does not have a direct equivalent, though the Tara Koota serves a related function.
