What is Dina Porutham?
Dina Porutham checks the birth star compatibility based on counting from the bride's nakshatra to the groom's. It determines overall health, well-being, and daily harmony in married life. The count from bride to groom nakshatra should not fall on specific inauspicious numbers (2, 4, 6, 8, 9 counted groups of 9).
How to Calculate
Count from bride's nakshatra to groom's nakshatra. Divide by 9. If the remainder is 2, 4, 6, 8, or 0, Dina Porutham is absent. If the remainder is 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9, Dina Porutham is present. The same check is done from groom to bride. Both should ideally pass.
FAQ
Q.Is Dina Porutham the same as Tara Koota?
They are similar but not identical. Both count from one nakshatra to another and check auspiciousness. Tara Koota (North Indian) gives 0-3 points. Dina Porutham (South Indian) gives pass/fail. The counting method and acceptable remainders differ slightly between traditions.
Q.Can marriage proceed without Dina Porutham?
Yes. Dina Porutham is important but not critical. If Rajju Porutham and Vedha Porutham are present, most astrologers approve the match even without Dina. The minimum recommendation is 5 out of 10 poruthams should match, including the critical ones.
