Thiruvathira (Thiruvadhirai)
Thiruvathira is a major festival in Kerala celebrated on the Ardra (Thiruvathira) nakshatra day in the Malayalam month of Dhanu. It is primarily a women's festival celebrated for the well-being and longevity of husbands. The festival marks the day Lord Shiva performed the cosmic dance (Ananda Tandava) and also commemorates the day Lord Krishna attained moksha according to some traditions. Women bathe before dawn, perform the Thiruvathira kali (a circular group dance), and observe a special fast eating only kali (rice pudding) and other simple foods.
