Gudi Padwa
Gudi Padwa is the Marathi and Konkani Hindu New Year, celebrated on the first day of Chaitra Shukla Paksha — the same day as Ugadi in Karnataka/Andhra. The word "Gudi" refers to a decorated bamboo staff topped with an upturned copper or silver pot, adorned with brocade cloth, garlands of flowers and neem leaves, and a garland of sugar crystals — erected outside homes as a symbol of victory and good fortune. According to tradition, Lord Rama returned to Ayodhya on this day after defeating Ravana, and people erected Gudis to celebrate. The day also marks the beginning of the harvest season and spring.
