Attukal Pongala
Attukal Pongala is a spectacular women-only festival held over 10 days at the Attukal Bhagavathi Temple in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It holds the Guinness World Record as the largest gathering of women for a religious activity — with over 2.5 million women cooking pongala (sweet rice pudding) simultaneously on open-air stoves in the streets. The festival celebrates Attukal Amma (Bhagavathi), believed to be a manifestation of Kannaki of the Tamil epic Silappatikaram, who burned Madurai in righteous fury after her husband Kovalan was unjustly executed.
