Ekadashi Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast
Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat
Utpanna Ekadashi falls on the Krishna Ekadashi of the Margashirsha month (November–December) and holds the distinction of being the "origin Ekadashi" — the day the goddess Ekadashi herself was born. According to the Bhavishya Uttara Purana, the demon Mura had defeated even the gods in Satya Yuga. Lord Vishnu, exhausted after a prolonged battle, rested in a cave, whereupon the goddess Ekadashi emerged from his body and slew Mura. A pleased Vishnu declared: "Since you were born on the Ekadashi tithi, you shall be known as Ekadashi, and whosoever fasts on this day shall be freed from all sins." This Ekadashi is therefore the mother of all Ekadashis and observing it bestows the combined merit of all 24 Ekadashis of the year.

Benefits
Bestows the combined merit of all 24 Ekadashis observed in a year, grants liberation (moksha) from the cycle of birth and death, destroys the most severe sins, ensures the direct grace of Ekadashi Devi and Lord Vishnu, and is especially powerful for beginning a lifelong Ekadashi vrat practice.
Procedure
On Dashami evening, take one light meal and resolve to keep the fast. On Ekadashi, bathe before sunrise and worship Vishnu along with Ekadashi Devi (represented by a gold or clay figure). Recite the Utpanna Ekadashi Vrat Katha from the Bhavishya Uttara Purana, which narrates the story of Mura's slaying. Chant the Vishnu Sahasranama and meditate on the Chaturbhuj form. Perform night-long jagaran. This is an auspicious day to formally commence an ongoing Ekadashi vrat practice.
When to Observe
Margashirsha Krishna Ekadashi — once per year (November/December). This is also the recommended day to begin a new lifelong commitment to monthly Ekadashi fasting.
Fasting Rules
No grains, lentils, onion, garlic, or non-vegetarian food. Nirjala fast is ideal given this Ekadashi's supreme status. Phalahar is permitted. Since this Ekadashi confers the merit of all Ekadashis, extra austerity (nirjala) is traditionally encouraged to maximise spiritual gain.
How to Break the Fast
On Dwadashi, rise early, worship Vishnu, and offer tulsi and flowers to Ekadashi Devi. Break fast with panchamrit or fruits. Donate to a Brahmin or feed a poor person. If this was your first Ekadashi vrat, formally declare your intention to continue observing Ekadashi each month.
