Ekadashi Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast

Devshayani Ekadashi Vrat

Deity Lord Vishnu
Type Ekadashi Fasts

Devshayani Ekadashi, also called Ashadhi Ekadashi or Hari Shayani Ekadashi, falls on the Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Ashadha (June–July). On this day Lord Vishnu is believed to retire into yogic sleep (Yoga Nidra) on the cosmic serpent Shesha in the Ksheer Sagar (Ocean of Milk) for four months until Devuthani Ekadashi. This marks the beginning of Chaturmas — the four sacred monsoon months during which auspicious ceremonies like marriages are avoided. It is one of the most important Ekadashis in the Vaishnava calendar.

Earns merit of a thousand Ashwamedha yajnas, removes all sins, ensures Vishnu's blessings through Chaturmas, grants liberation, and is especially auspicious for Warkari pilgrims visiting Pandharpur.

Procedure

Fast from sunrise to next day sunrise. Worship Lord Vishnu in his Shayana (reclining) form. Chant the Devshayani Ekadashi Katha. Offer tulsi garland to Vishnu. Light a lamp and keep it burning through the night. Warkari devotees undertake padyatra (walking pilgrimage) to Pandharpur. Stay awake at night chanting Vitthal nama.
