Ekadashi Fasts — Hindu Sacred Fast
Bijaya Ekadashi Vrat
Bijaya Ekadashi (also spelled Vijaya Ekadashi) falls on the Krishna Ekadashi of the Phalguna month (February–March). Its name means "victory," and it is directly linked to the Ramayana: Lord Rama observed this very fast before crossing the ocean to Lanka to rescue Sita, receiving the blessings of the sage Bakadalbhya. The Padma Purana states that this Ekadashi confers invincibility on the devotee, removes obstacles from all undertakings, and grants the merit equivalent to performing an Ashwamedha Yajna. It is especially popular among those seeking success in competitions, legal matters, or any major life endeavour.

Benefits
Grants victory and invincibility in all endeavours, removes obstacles before important undertakings, bestows merit equal to Ashwamedha Yajna, ensures success in legal battles and competitions, and liberates ancestors from negative karmas.
Procedure
On Dashami evening eat only once with sattvik food. On Ekadashi, rise before sunrise, bathe, and install a Kalash filled with water near the Vishnu idol. Worship Lord Vishnu (Trivikrama form) with tulsi, flowers, incense, and a lamp. Recite or listen to the Vijaya Ekadashi Vrat Katha from the Padma Purana. Chant "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" 108 times. Perform night-long jagaran with Vishnu bhajans. On Dwadashi, immerse the Kalash water in a river or garden before breaking fast.
When to Observe
Phalguna Krishna Ekadashi — once per year (February/March). Falls shortly before Holi, making it a significant austerity before the spring festival season.
Fasting Rules
Complete nirjala (waterless) fast is ideal and yields maximum merit. Phalahar (fruits, milk, dry fruits) is acceptable for those unable to do nirjala. Strictly avoid rice, wheat, lentils, onion, garlic, meat, and alcohol.
How to Break the Fast
On Dwadashi, pour the Kalash water at the base of a tulsi plant or in a holy river. Then worship Vishnu briefly, offer sesame seeds and tulsi, and break the fast with panchamrit or simple prasad before the first meal of the day.
