Life Ceremonies — Vedic Puja Vidhi
Upanayana (Thread Ceremony)
Upanayana, also known as the Janeu or Yagyopavita ceremony, is the sacred thread ceremony marking a boy's initiation into Vedic learning and the Brahmacharya (student) stage of life. It is one of the most significant of the Shodasha Samskaras. The ceremony involves investiture of the sacred Yagyopavita (three-stranded thread) across the left shoulder, initiation of the Gayatri Mantra by the father or guru, and symbolic shaving of the head. The thread represents the three debts owed to the gods, sages, and ancestors.
