Vishnu & Vaishnava — Vedic Puja Vidhi
Janmashtami Puja
Janmashtami Puja is the grand midnight celebration of Lord Krishna's birth — the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu — observed on Ashtami (the eighth day) of the dark fortnight of Bhadrapada month (August–September). Krishna was born at the stroke of midnight in the prison of Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva, and his birth is considered one of the most momentous events in Hindu cosmology, marking the end of adharma and the restoration of righteousness. The puja involves the ceremonial bathing (abhishek) of a Krishna idol with panchamrit, decorating him in royal attire, placing him in a decorated jhula (swing), singing bhajans and kirtans, observing a strict fast, and breaking it only after midnight when a conch is blown to announce Krishna's birth. Temples across India — especially Mathura, Vrindavan, Dwarka, and Udupi — celebrate Janmashtami with extraordinary devotion and pageantry.

Benefits
Bestows the blessings of Lord Krishna — the embodiment of divine love, wisdom, and playfulness — on the entire family, grants fulfilment of heartfelt desires and wishes, removes sins and negative karmas accumulated over many lifetimes, brings joy, harmony, and childlike devotion into the home, protects devotees from evil and negative forces, and grants liberation to those who observe the vrat with complete faith.
Step-by-Step Procedure
Begin the day with a strict fast (nirjala or fruit-only). Thoroughly clean and decorate the home with flowers, rangoli, and torans. Set up a cradle (jhula) for Baby Krishna decorated with flowers, peacock feathers, and silk cloth. Place a small Krishna idol (Bal Gopal) or Laddu Gopal at the altar. At sunset, perform evening aarti. Through the night, organise bhajan-kirtan sessions, recite the Bhagavata Purana's 10th Skandha (Krishna's birth narrative) or sing Govinda Govinda. At midnight (the birth hour), perform the full abhishek of the Krishna idol with panchamrit (milk, curd, honey, ghee, sugar), then with Ganga water. Dress the idol in fresh yellow silk attire, adorn with tulsi garland and jewels. Place the idol in the jhula and gently rock it while singing "Nand gher anand bhayo, Jai Kanhaiya lal ki." Offer makhan-mishri (butter and sugar), panjiri, and fruits as prasad. Blow the conch at midnight to announce Krishna's birth. Break the fast only after the midnight puja.
