Vishnu & Vaishnava — Vedic Puja Vidhi

Govatsa Dvadashi Puja

Deity Lord Vishnu & Sacred Cow (Kamadhenu)
Duration 1–2 hours
Category Vishnu & Vaishnava

Govatsa Dvadashi, also known as Vasu Baras or Nandini Vrat, is observed on the twelfth day (Dvadashi) of the dark fortnight in the month of Kartik. It is dedicated to the worship of the cow and her calf, symbolising abundance, nurturing, and the divine grace of Lord Vishnu. Cows are considered sacred in Hinduism as earthly representations of Kamadhenu, the wish-fulfilling divine cow. On this day, devotees worship the cow and calf with flowers, incense, and special foods, seeking blessings for the well-being of children and prosperity of the family.

Benefits

Govatsa Dvadashi Puja bestows the blessings of Lord Vishnu and the divine Kamadhenu for the health, longevity, and happiness of one's children. It is believed to fulfil desires, bring material prosperity, protect children from harm, and ensure the continuity of family lineage. The puja also generates immense punya (spiritual merit) and is said to wash away sins accumulated over many lifetimes.

Step-by-Step Procedure

On the morning of Govatsa Dvadashi, bathe and wear clean clothes. Find a cow with her calf and clean the area around them. Decorate the cow and calf with garlands and apply roli and turmeric on their foreheads. Offer fresh grass, jaggery, wheat bread (roti), and sesame seeds to the cow. Light incense and a diya. Offer prayers to Lord Vishnu and recite the Govatsa Dvadashi Vrat Katha. Circumambulate (pradakshina) the cow and calf three times. Observe a fast for the day, eating only once and avoiding milk and dairy products. Donate to a cowshed (goshala) or feed cows as an act of service.
