Shiva Worship — Vedic Puja Vidhi

Bhairav Puja

Deity Bhairava (Fierce manifestation of Shiva)
Duration 1–2 hours
Category Shiva Worship

Bhairav Puja is the worship of Bhairava — one of the most powerful and terrifying manifestations of Lord Shiva — whose name literally means "The Frightful One" or "One who controls and destroys fear." Kaal Bhairav, the most revered form, is considered the Kotwal (guardian and administrator) of Kashi (Varanasi), and no pilgrimage to Kashi is complete without his darshan. There are eight principal forms of Bhairava known as the Ashta Bhairavas, each ruling one direction of the cosmos, with Kaal Bhairav being the supreme. Bhairava is intimately connected with the Shakti Peethas, serving as the Bhairava (consort guardian) at each of the 51 sites. Bhairav Ashtami, which falls on the eighth day of the dark fortnight of Margashirsha, is the most important festival dedicated to his worship.

Benefits

Bhairav Puja grants fearlessness, protection from sudden calamities, theft, accidents, and untimely death. Kaal Bhairav controls Kaal (time and death), so his worship is particularly sought during severe health crises, life-threatening situations, and to remove the fear of death. He destroys obstacles created by enemies, removes black magic and evil eye, and bestows sharp intelligence and forensic insight. Bhairava worship also removes skin diseases, bone ailments, and Saturn-related afflictions. His grace liberates devotees from the cycle of karma by burning away fear — the root of all bondage.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Begin on a Sunday or Bhairav Ashtami day. Bathe early and wear black or dark blue clothing — Bhairava's colours. Set up the altar with an image of Kaal Bhairav or a Bhairava linga. Light a mustard oil lamp and black sesame incense. Offer black sesame seeds, mustard oil, wine (or water as a substitute in Sattvic worship), urad dal (black lentils), and black flowers. Recite the Bhairav Ashtottara (108 names of Bhairava) or the Kaal Bhairav Ashtakam. In Tantric traditions, the worship includes a more elaborate ritual with specific bija mantras. In household worship, reciting "Om Kaal Bhairavaya Namah" 108 times on a rudraksha mala is sufficient. Offer coconut or raw fish as naivedyam (depending on regional tradition). Perform aarti with camphor. Dogs are sacred to Bhairava — feeding street dogs before or after the puja is considered highly meritorious and pleasing to the deity.

Best Time (Muhurat)

Bhairav Ashtami (Krishna Ashtami of Margashirsha month, November–December) is the most important day, believed to be Bhairava's birthday. Every Sunday is auspicious for Bhairava worship throughout the year. The midnight hour is considered his most powerful time. New moon nights (Amavasya) are also potent times for his worship, particularly for Tantric rituals.
