Frequently Asked Questions
Q.Who is Varahi and how is she related to the Sapta Matrikas?
Varahi is one of the Sapta Matrikas (Seven Divine Mothers) — the seven goddess-energies born from the bodies of the major male deities to fight the demon Andhakasura. Varahi emerged from Lord Varaha (the boar avatar of Vishnu), inheriting his earth-protecting, demon-crushing power. In the Sri Vidya tradition she is elevated further as Danda-natha — the commander-in-chief of Lalita Tripura Sundari's army, making her one of the most powerful protective goddesses in the entire tantric pantheon.
Q.What is the difference between Varahi and Varaha (the Vishnu avatar)?
Varaha is the male boar avatar of Vishnu who lifted the earth (Bhudevi) from the primordial ocean. Varahi is the Shakti — the feminine power — that arose from Varaha's energy, separately worshipped as an independent goddess in the Shakta tradition. While Varaha embodies earth-lifting and cosmic preservation, Varahi embodies earth-protection in a fierce, warrior-goddess form. In South Indian (especially Tamil) Shakta tradition, Varahi (called Panchami) is one of the most intensely worshipped goddesses, with dedicated temples throughout Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
