  • ·Essential prerequisite mantra for Durga Saptashati (Chandi Path) recitation — sanctifies the reciter

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What does "Navarna" mean and why does it have 9 syllables?

Navarna means "nine syllables" (nava = nine, arna = syllable/letter). The nine syllables are: Aim, Hreem, Kleem, Cha, mun, da, yai, Vich, che. In Tantric numerology, nine is the number of completion and of the Navadurga (nine forms of Durga). Each syllable is said to correspond to one of the nine Durgas and one of the nine cosmic principles. The Devi Bhagavata Purana and the Tantrasara both identify the Navarna as the root mantra (mula mantra) of the Devi tradition.

Q.What is the difference between the Navarna Mantra and the Durga beej mantra?

The Durga beej mantra is simply "Dum" — a single seed syllable invoking Durga's protective power. The Navarna Mantra is far more comprehensive — it combines three major beej syllables (Aim, Hreem, Kleem) plus the specific invocation of Chamunda. This makes it a compound mantra that simultaneously activates knowledge (Saraswati), illusion-dissolving grace (Bhuvaneshvari), and transformative power (Kali). Tantric texts describe the Navarna as capable of bestowing all the fruits that would otherwise require separate sadhanas for each Mahavidya.

Q.Can the Navarna Mantra be chanted without initiation?

Traditional Tantric masters recommend receiving diksha (initiation) for the full Navarna sadhana. However, many modern Devi temples and teachers such as Swami Satyananda Saraswati and the Devi Mandir tradition teach that sincere, devotional chanting of the Navarna — especially in the context of Durga Saptashati recitation — is open to all spiritual seekers. It is advisable to approach the mantra with reverence, purity of intention, and ideally during Navratri for the first practice.
