Dattatreya Puja

Deity Lord Dattatreya
Duration 1–2 hours
Category Other Pujas

Dattatreya Puja is the worship of Lord Dattatreya — the combined form of the Hindu Trinity: Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the preserver), and Shiva (the destroyer) — embodied in a single divine being with three heads and six arms. Dattatreya is revered as the Adi Guru (the first teacher) and the lord of yoga, tantra, and Vedic wisdom. He is considered the guru of gurus and is worshipped especially in the Datta Sampradaya tradition of Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. Dattatreya is portrayed as a wandering sage accompanied by four dogs (representing the four Vedas) and a cow (representing mother earth). His puja is believed to dissolve ego, remove ancestral curses, and bestow supreme wisdom.

Benefits

Bestows supreme wisdom and self-realisation, removes ancestral debts and pitru dosha, liberates the devotee from ego and ignorance, accelerates progress on the spiritual path, grants protection from black magic and evil forces, and fulfils desires for knowledge, peace, and liberation.

Step-by-Step Procedure

Place a Dattatreya image or idol on a clean altar facing east. Offer panchamrit abhishek and then fresh water. Decorate with yellow flowers and tulsi. Light a ghee lamp with three wicks (for the three deities). Recite Datta Stavam or Shri Gurucharitra excerpts. Offer betel leaves, coconut, and fruits. Meditate on the unity of the three divine energies. Feed a cow or dogs after the puja as an act of service to Dattatreya's symbolic companions.

Best Time (Muhurat)

Dattatreya Jayanti (Margashirsha Purnima) is the most sacred day. Thursdays throughout the year, Datta Dwadashi, and the month of Margashirsha are highly auspicious. Brahma Muhurta is the ideal daily time.
