Pitru Tarpan
Pitru Tarpan is a sacred Vedic ritual of offering water (tarpan) mixed with black sesame seeds, barley, and kusha grass to deceased ancestors. It is performed to honor the souls of forefathers, seek their blessings, and help them attain peace in the afterlife. According to Vedic tradition, ancestors who have not attained moksha continue to exist in the Pitru Loka and depend on their descendants for nourishment. Performing regular tarpan fulfills this ancestral debt (Pitru Rin) and removes Pitru Dosha from the family horoscope.

Benefits
Removes Pitru Dosha from the family chart, brings blessings of ancestors for prosperity and progeny, resolves persistent family problems and generational patterns, ensures peace for departed souls, improves fertility and conception for families facing difficulty, prevents untimely deaths in the family, and brings overall harmony and spiritual merit (punya).
Step-by-Step Procedure
Take a bath and wear white dhoti. Go to a river bank, pond, or perform at home with a clean vessel of water. Hold kusha grass in the right hand. Mix black sesame seeds and barley into water. Face south (the direction of ancestors) and offer water while chanting the name and gotra of each ancestor. Recite Pitru Tarpan mantras from the Vedas. Offer three handfuls of water for each ancestor — father, grandfather, great-grandfather (paternal and maternal lines). Complete with Pitru Stotra recitation.
