Navami Shradh — Matri Navami (Day 9 of Pitru Paksha)
नवमी श्राद्ध — मातृ नवमी
Last reviewed: April 2026
Navami Shradh (नवमी श्राद्ध), called Matri Navami (मातृ नवमी), is day 9 of Pitru Paksha — specifically dedicated to departed mothers, grandmothers, and all female ancestors. This is one of the most important shradh tithis for matrilineal offerings. मातृपक्ष की पितरी स्त्रियों के लिए यह दिन समर्पित है।
The Practice
In some North Indian traditions, Matri Navami is observed even if the mother is still living, as a rite for grandmother and earlier female ancestors.
Sumangali Brahmani bhojan: a married woman whose husband is living is fed — considered especially auspicious for Matri Navami.
Offerings include items associated with motherhood: milk, ghee, jaggery, bangles, turmeric.
The karta offers a specific prayer of gratitude to all mothers in the lineage — not just direct ancestors.
Tarpan is offered with additional flowers — particularly red flowers symbolic of sumangali (married state).
At the close, the karta touches the feet of any living elder women in the family as part of the rite — honoring the living mother-line.
Regional Variations
North Indian Tradition
Matri Navami is prominent in North India; red bangles, kumkum, and saree are given to the Brahmani.
South Indian Tradition
South Indian tradition observes Matri Navami with turmeric, flowers, and a traditional saree gift to the Brahmani.
Bengali Tradition
Mahalaya tarpan includes maternal tarpan; Matri Navami as a distinct observance is less emphasized.
Gujarati Tradition
Gujarati tradition observes Matri Navami with offerings at home and feeding a Brahmani.
The Thing Nobody Else Says
Matri Navami is the only pitru rite specifically dedicated to female ancestors — without it, the maternal line can remain ritually un-addressed, since most shradh focuses on the patrilineal line.
Nirnaya Sindhu explicitly states that matri-shradh is essential for the complete release of the maternal lineage; without Matri Navami, the mother's side ancestors may not receive specific offerings throughout the year.

What If —
What if my mother is still living — can I still observe Matri Navami?
Yes. The rite is performed for grandmothers, great-grandmothers, and all female ancestors who have departed. Mother's tarpan is added only after her passing.
What if no Brahmani is available to be fed?
A Brahmin man with his wife, or feeding a poor woman as symbolic Brahmani, is accepted. The intent and the offering matter most.
