Vastu Plants

Vastu Plants for Home — Which Plants Go Where

Quick Answer

Tulsi in north-east (most auspicious plant in Vedic tradition). Money plant in north or south-east. Bamboo in east. Jasmine near entrance. Avoid cactus, thorny plants, and bonsai inside the home — they create stagnant, contracted energy. Dry or dead plants must be removed immediately.

Plants in Vastu are not decoration — they are living energy modulators. Each species carries a specific elemental quality, and Vastu places each plant where it can reinforce the directional energy of that zone rather than contradict it.

Tulsi (Holy Basil) — The Supreme Vastu Plant

No plant in the Indian Vastu tradition carries the weight of Tulsi. It is considered the physical embodiment of Lakshmi and is said to purify the atmosphere within a 12-foot radius. Classical texts describe Tulsi as creating a pranic (life-force) shield around the home.

Placement: north-east courtyard or balcony (outdoors, in sunlight). Tulsi must not be kept in the bedroom or bathroom. She requires direct sunlight and a separate pot — never tangled with other plants.

Water Tulsi on all days except Sunday and Ekadashi. Never pluck leaves after sunset or on Ekadashi.

Money Plant (Pothos) — Wealth Activator

South-east if the goal is financial growth (fire element supports rapid movement). North if the goal is steady, accumulating wealth. Money plant should trail upward, not hang downward — downward growth symbolizes declining fortune.

Keep money plant in water (hydroponics) for the north zone — it reinforces the water-element character of the north.

Money plant is one of the few plants acceptable in the bedroom — it is gentle, air-purifying, and does not create any aggressive energy.

Lucky Bamboo

East for health. North for wealth. Three stalks for happiness, five for wealth, seven for health, nine for fortune. Twenty-one stalks for a powerful blessing (used in temples and large homes).

Keep bamboo in a glass vase with clean water. Change water every two weeks. Do not let the water stagnate.

Jasmine (Mogra/Chameli)

The fragrance of jasmine at the entrance is one of the oldest Vastu recommendations — scent is prana (life-force), and jasmine's particular frequency is calming and welcoming. Plant jasmine near the main entrance or north balcony.

Plants to Avoid Inside the Home

Cactus: Thorns symbolize and create defensive, closed energy. The defensive posture keeps prosperity at bay. A cactus at the entrance repels rather than welcomes.

Bonsai: A deliberately stunted plant — growth is artificially constrained. Vastu holds that bonsai creates stunted energy in the corresponding area of life (wealth if in the north, career if in the east).

Dried or artificial flowers: Dead organic matter holds stagnant, depleting energy. Fresh or living only.

Milk-exuding plants (except Tulsi variety): Classical Vastu texts advise against plants that "bleed" white sap indoors — it is considered inauspicious.

Key Vastu Tips

  • Tulsi in north-east (outdoors, direct sunlight) — never in bedroom or bathroom
  • Money plant in north (steady wealth) or south-east (fast growth)
  • Lucky bamboo in east (health) or north (wealth)
  • Jasmine near main entrance for welcoming fragrance
  • No cactus or thorny plants inside the home
  • No bonsai inside — stunted growth energy
  • Remove dead or dying plants immediately — never keep them "just in case"

FAQ — Vastu Plants for Home

Q.Can money plant be kept in bedroom?

Yes — money plant is one of the few plants recommended for the bedroom in Vastu. It is gentle, air-purifying, and does not create aggressive energy. Keep it on the east side of the bedroom (receiving morning light is ideal) or south-east. Avoid the north of the bedroom for plants in general.

Q.Is cactus bad in home as per Vastu?

Vastu advises against cactus inside the home. Thorns create a defensive, repelling energy that keeps people (and prosperity) at arm's length. Outside the home, particularly in the south or south-west, cactus is neutral to mildly protective. But at entrances or inside rooms, remove them.

Q.How many tulsi plants should be kept at home?

The classical guidance is odd numbers — 1, 3, 5, or 7. A single large Tulsi plant in a prominent north-east location is more effective than multiple neglected plants scattered around. The plant must be actively cared for — a wilting or dead Tulsi is worse than no Tulsi.
