Introduction

Navagraha — The Nine Planets of Vedic Astrology

The Navagraha — literally "nine seizers" — are the nine celestial forces that Vedic astrology considers the primary shapers of human destiny. Unlike Western astronomy's planet count, Jyotish includes the Sun and Moon as grahas and adds Rahu and Ketu, the shadow nodes of the Moon, giving a total of nine. Each graha is not merely a physical body but a living cosmic intelligence: a combination of karmic principle, deity, and vibrational frequency that permeates every dimension of existence.

In the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra — the foundational text of Jyotish — each graha is assigned a unique body type, temperament, element, direction, colour, metal, gemstone, and day of the week. These correspondences form a complete system: by understanding the graha's nature and its condition in the birth chart, the classical astrologer can read the entire arc of a human life — from health and wealth to spiritual calling and the timing of major events through the Vimshottari Dasha system.

The seven visible grahas each rule one day of the week, one or two zodiac signs, specific body organs, and a Mahadasha period ranging from six to twenty years. Rahu and Ketu — the shadow planets — rule no signs in the Parashari school but exert a powerful eclipsing and karmic influence wherever they fall. Together, the Navagraha form the planetary cabinet that governs all experience between birth and liberation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the Navagraha in Vedic astrology?

The Navagraha (नवग्रह) are the nine celestial bodies recognised in Vedic astrology: Sun (Surya), Moon (Chandra), Mars (Mangal), Mercury (Budha), Jupiter (Brihaspati/Guru), Venus (Shukra), Saturn (Shani), and the two lunar nodes Rahu and Ketu. Each graha governs specific areas of life, body parts, days of the week, gemstones, and karmic themes.

Which Navagraha is the most powerful?

In classical Jyotish, the Sun (Surya) is the king of the Navagraha and the Atmakaraka — significator of the soul. However, the most powerful planet in any individual chart is determined by its strength (shadbala), house placement, and lordship — not by a universal ranking. A well-placed Saturn or exalted Jupiter in a kendra can exert more influence than a weak Sun.

What is the difference between benefic and malefic planets in Jyotish?

Natural benefics (naisargika shubha grahas) are Jupiter, Venus, waxing Moon, and Mercury when associated with benefics. Natural malefics are Sun, Mars, Saturn, waning Moon, Rahu, and Ketu. However, functional benefic/malefic status depends on the ascendant — a planet ruling a trine (5th/9th) is functionally benefic regardless of its natural nature.

How do the Navagraha affect daily life?

Each of the seven visible Navagraha rules one day of the week (Sunday–Saturday correspond to Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn). Their positions in the natal chart shape personality, health, career, and relationships. Transits (gochar) of slow-moving planets like Saturn and Jupiter over sensitive natal points produce major life events. Dasha periods — Mahadashas of each planet — time when each graha's themes become dominant.
