The demon king Bali had performed tremendous austerities and defeated the gods, taking control of all three worlds. Vishnu took the form of Vamana, a diminutive Brahmin boy, and approached Bali's grand sacrifice. When Bali graciously offered to fulfil any wish, Vamana asked only for three steps of land. Bali's guru Shukracharya warned him that this was Vishnu in disguise, but Bali — bound by his word — agreed. With two steps Vamana covered all the heavens and earth; for the third step there was no space left. Bali offered his own head. Vishnu placed his foot there, sending Bali to rule Patala while restoring the three worlds to the gods, but honouring Bali's extraordinary generosity with the boon of becoming Indra in the next Manvantara.
