Frequently Asked Questions
Q.Why is Tulsi so sacred in Hinduism?
Tulsi (Holy Basil) is considered the earthly manifestation of Vrinda, a devoted saint who became synonymous with the sacred plant. She is the most beloved plant of Vishnu — no Vishnu puja is complete without Tulsi leaves. The Padma Purana states that the home where Tulsi grows is a pilgrimage site (tirtha) — Yama's messengers do not approach it. Tulsi also has extraordinary medicinal properties recognized by Ayurveda.
Q.Can I keep a Tulsi plant indoors?
Traditionally, Tulsi should be kept outdoors in a Tulsi vrindavan (a raised platform), preferably in the northeast or east of the courtyard, where it gets sunlight. Modern apartments can keep it on a balcony or near an east-facing window that gets at least 4–6 hours of sunlight. The key is that it must receive sunlight — it cannot thrive in full shade indoors.
