What is a Janam Kundali?

A janam kundali is a map of the sky at the exact moment and place of your birth. Vedic astrology (Jyotish) uses nine planets: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. These are distributed across 12 houses, each governing a distinct domain of life. The lagna (ascendant) is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth and is the most personal point in the chart.

Unlike a Western horoscope based on your Sun sign alone, a Vedic kundali uses the sidereal zodiac (corrected for the precession of equinoxes using ayanamsa) and analyses the complete chart including planetary strengths, house lordships, yogas (special combinations), and dasha (planetary period) timing. The result is a precise, time-tested system for understanding life patterns.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is a janam kundali?

A janam kundali (also spelled janma kundali or kundli) is a Vedic birth chart that maps the positions of the nine planets (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu) at the exact moment of your birth. In Jyotish (Vedic astrology), the kundali is divided into 12 houses, each governing a different area of life, from career and wealth to marriage and spirituality. The lagna (ascendant) is the most important point, determined by which zodiac sign was rising on the eastern horizon at birth.

Q.Is this kundali generator free? Do I need to register?

Yes, completely free. No registration, no email, no account required. Enter your name, date, time, and place of birth and your kundali is generated instantly. We believe your birth chart data should not be held hostage behind a signup wall.

Q.How accurate is this online kundali?

We use Swiss Ephemeris, the same astronomical engine used by professional astrology software worldwide. Planetary positions are accurate to arc-second precision. We apply Lahiri ayanamsa (the standard used by the Government of India) and whole-sign house division as described in Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS). The accuracy depends primarily on the exactness of your birth time: even a 4-minute difference can shift the lagna.

Q.What is the difference between kundali and horoscope?

A kundali (birth chart) is a fixed map of the sky at your birth moment, it never changes. A horoscope is a periodic prediction (daily, weekly, monthly) based on current planetary transits. Your kundali is the foundation; horoscopes interpret how current planetary movements interact with your natal kundali. In Vedic astrology, the kundali is far more detailed and personal than a Sun-sign horoscope.

Q.Can I generate kundali by name and date of birth without time?

You need a birth time to generate a complete kundali. Without it, the lagna (ascendant) and house positions cannot be determined, and roughly half the chart becomes unknown. If you do not know your exact birth time, use 6:00 AM as a placeholder, this gives you the planetary positions but the lagna and houses will not be reliable. We recommend obtaining your birth certificate or hospital records for the exact time.

Q.What is Lahiri ayanamsa?

Ayanamsa is the angular difference between the tropical zodiac (used in Western astrology) and the sidereal zodiac (used in Vedic astrology). Lahiri ayanamsa, also called Chitrapaksha ayanamsa, is the standard approved by India's National Panchang Committee and is used by the majority of Vedic astrologers. For 2026, the Lahiri ayanamsa value is approximately 24 degrees 7 minutes.

Q.What is kundali matching?

Kundali matching (also called Gun Milan or Ashtakoot Milan) is a traditional Vedic compatibility analysis performed before marriage. It scores the compatibility between two birth charts across 8 dimensions (Gunas): Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, and Nadi. Maximum score is 36 points. A score of 18 or above is generally considered acceptable for marriage. You can try our free kundali matching tool.

Q.How do I read my kundali chart?

Start with the lagna (ascendant), the numbered box marked "As" or "Lg" in the North Indian chart. The number tells you the lagna sign (1=Aries, 2=Taurus, ... 12=Pisces). Each box in the chart is a house; the number of planets shown in each house indicates which planets are placed there. Planet symbols: Su=Sun, Mo=Moon, Ma=Mars, Me=Mercury, Ju=Jupiter, Ve=Venus, Sa=Saturn, Ra=Rahu, Ke=Ketu. See our complete guide to reading a kundali for detailed instructions.
