Which Houses Create Manglik Dosha

Mars placed in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th house creates Manglik Dosha — when calculated from the Lagna (ascendant). This is the primary and most widely accepted definition, found in texts like Muhurta Chintamani and referenced in various classical sources.

However, different schools extend this check: some classical Jyotishis also check Mars's position from the Moon sign (Chandra Lagna) and from Venus's sign position (Shukra Lagna). If Manglik Dosha exists from any two of the three reference points (Lagna, Moon, Venus), the dosha is considered present. If it exists from all three, it is considered strong.

The houses and their logic: the 1st house (self) — Mars here makes the native combative in relationship; 2nd house (family) — Mars here creates disharmony in the family-of-marriage context; 4th house (home and domestic peace) — Mars here disrupts domestic harmony; 7th house (spouse) — Mars directly in the house of partner creates conflict with the spouse; 8th house (longevity) — the most serious classical concern, associated with longevity challenges for the partner; 12th house (bed pleasures and loss) — Mars here can create discord in the intimate partnership.

How to Check Step by Step

Step 1: Identify Mars's house position from the Lagna (ascendant) in the birth chart. Count the Lagna as house 1.

Step 2: Check if Mars falls in house 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from the Lagna.

Step 3: Identify the Moon's sign (Janma Rashi) and treat it as a temporary ascendant. Count from the Moon's sign and check if Mars falls in positions 1, 2, 4, 7, 8, or 12 from this reference.

Step 4: Identify Venus's sign in the chart and treat it as a third reference. Check Mars's position from Venus.

Step 5: If Manglik from any reference point, check for cancellation conditions (see below) before concluding dosha is active.

Cancellation Conditions (Dosha Parivartana)

The cancellation conditions are as important as the dosha itself — and they apply to a large percentage of people with technical Manglik positions:

1. Mars in its own signs (Mesha or Vrishchika) in the dosha houses cancels the dosha. A Mars in its own sign in the 7th house is powerful, not damaging, in the classical view.

2. Mars in exaltation (Makara) in a dosha house cancels the dosha.

3. Mars in the sign of a benefic (Jupiter, Venus) in a dosha house weakens the dosha significantly.

4. Jupiter aspecting Mars cancels the dosha in many classical schools.

5. If both partners are Manglik — Mars in a dosha house for both charts — the dosha cancels by mutual effect. This is the most widely cited cancellation in popular practice.

6. Mars in Kumbha Lagna's 2nd house (Meena) — some schools exempt this placement entirely.

7. Mars in Simha or Karka Lagna's specific houses receives cancellation in some school-specific rules.

The practical consequence: when all cancellation conditions are properly evaluated, the percentage of people with an active, uncancelled Manglik Dosha is far lower than the 50%+ figure often cited commercially (which counts only the presence, not cancellations).
