Panchakshari Mantra

TypeVedic Mantra
DeityLord Shiva
Syllables5

Sanskrit (Devanagari)

ॐ नमः शिवाय

Transliteration

Om Namah Shivaya

Meaning

Om — the primordial cosmic sound. Namah — I bow, I surrender with total humility. Shivaya — to Shiva, the auspicious one, the supreme consciousness that is pure, unchanging, and the witness of all. The five syllables Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya correspond to the five elements: earth (Na), water (Ma), fire (Shi), air (Va), space (Ya) — and to the five actions of Shiva: creation, preservation, dissolution, concealment, and grace.

Benefits of Panchakshari Mantra

  • ·The Panchakshari is the distilled essence of all Vedic wisdom in five syllables — said to contain the power of the entire Vedas
  • ·Purifies all five elements within the body and the subtle body — realigns the panchakosha (five sheaths of consciousness)
  • ·Removes the effects of all sins and negative karma from previous lives through sincere, sustained repetition
  • ·Strengthens all planetary positions in the horoscope — Shiva as Mahakala transcends all planetary karma
  • ·Bestows viveka (discrimination between real and unreal) and vairagya (dispassion) — the twin prerequisites for liberation
  • ·Creates profound states of inner stillness and samadhi — the mantra vibration resonates with Shiva's nature as pure witness consciousness

How to Chant

  1. 1.Sit facing north or east on a white or ash-grey asana; Brahma Muhurta is ideal but any time is auspicious
  2. 2.Light a ghee or sesame oil lamp; offer bel (bilva) leaves, white flowers, and raw milk to a Shivalinga or Shiva image
  3. 3.Use a Rudraksha mala — the traditional mala for all Shiva mantras; a crystal mala is also auspicious
  4. 4.The Panchakshari can be chanted aloud (vaikhari), in a whisper (upamshu), or silently in the mind (manasika) — mental chanting is considered most powerful
  5. 5.Synchronise with the breath: silently chant "Na-Ma" on the inhale and "Shi-Va-Ya" on the exhale for a continuous, meditative flow
  6. 6.The ultimate practice: maintain an unbroken stream of Panchakshari repetition in the background of the mind at all times — this is called Ajapa-japa and is the highest Shiva sadhana

Best Time

Any time — Shiva is beyond time. Most auspicious: Brahma Muhurta, Pradosha (13th lunar day), Monday, Mahashivaratri. Continuous mental chanting at all times is the highest practice.

Recommended Count

108 times daily (1 mala). For deep practice: 3–5 malas at Brahma Muhurta. Purashcharan: 1.25 lakh. The ideal: continuous unbroken mental Ajapa throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the difference between "Om Namah Shivaya" and the Panchakshari proper — is Om part of the five syllables?

The true Panchakshari (five-syllable mantra) is Na-Ma-Shi-Va-Ya without Om. These five syllables correspond directly to the five elements and the five cosmic actions of Shiva (Pancha Krityas). The Om prefix is added to constitute the Shadakshari (six-syllable) form — "Om Namah Shivaya" — which is the form most commonly taught and chanted today. The Shiva Purana describes both forms: the pure Panchakshari for advanced initiates and the Shadakshari (with Om) for general practice. Both are valid; the Om version is universally used.

Q.How does the Panchakshari differ from Om Namah Shivaya in the Shiv Panchakshara Stotram?

The Shiv Panchakshara Stotram (composed by Adi Shankaracharya) is a five-verse hymn in which each verse meditates on one of the five syllables (Na, Ma, Shi, Va, Ya) and the cosmic principle it embodies. Chanting the Stotram is a deep meditative unpacking of the mantra's meaning. The mantra itself (Om Namah Shivaya) is the seed; the Stotram is the flower — a devotional elaboration that makes the abstract syllables vivid and experiential. Regular Stotram chanting enriches the mantra practice considerably.

Q.Can women chant the Panchakshari Mantra?

Yes — unconditionally. The Panchakshari is one of the most universally accessible mantras in all of Hinduism. Unlike some Vedic recitations that carry traditional restrictions, the Panchakshari has no such conditions. Goddess Parvati herself is said to have received it from Shiva, and countless female saints — Akka Mahadevi, Avvaiyar, Mirabai — chanted it as their core practice. Any restriction would directly contradict the nature of Shiva as the all-pervading consciousness that dwells equally in all beings.
