How to Chant

Frequently Asked Questions

Q.What is the story of the Kurma avatar?

After the gods (Devas) lost their strength due to a curse from the sage Durvasa, they sought Vishnu's help to churn the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan) and recover Amrita, the nectar of immortality. The churning required Mount Mandara as a churning rod — but it had no base and began to sink. Vishnu took the form of a giant tortoise (Kurma) and dived to the bottom of the ocean, providing a stable foundation on his back. The churning proceeded and fourteen precious things (Ratnas) emerged, including Goddess Lakshmi, Dhanvantari with Amrita, and the divine horse Ucchaishravas.

Q.Can the Kurma Mantra help with anxiety and restlessness?

Kurma's energy is fundamentally stabilising and grounding. The mantra is widely recommended for Vata imbalances — restlessness, anxiety, insomnia, and feelings of being unmoored. Meditating on the image of Kurma — perfectly still at the bottom of a turbulent churning ocean — is itself a powerful visualisation practice for cultivating inner stillness amid outer chaos.
