Frequently Asked Questions

Q.Who is Hayagriva and what is his story?

Hayagriva is a horse-headed avatar of Vishnu who is the presiding deity of knowledge. According to the Devi Bhagavata Purana, the demon Madhu and Kaitabha stole the Vedas from Brahma while he slept. Vishnu took the form of Hayagriva (horse-headed) to enter the cosmic ocean, slay the demons, and recover the four Vedas. He then returned them to Brahma for the re-creation of the universe. Hayagriva is therefore the supreme guardian of all knowledge and the patron of all scholars.

Q.Is Hayagriva different from Saraswati for learning purposes?

Both are knowledge deities, but with different emphases. Saraswati (invoked with Aim) governs creative wisdom, arts, music, and inspired speech. Hayagriva specifically governs scriptural knowledge, academic mastery, memory retention, and the recovery of lost knowledge. For students of scriptures, Sanskrit, philosophy, and competitive academics, Hayagriva's mantra is often more specifically targeted. Many Vaishnavas chant Hayagriva at the start of all studies.
