Harvest Festivals — Hindu Sacred Festival
Onam
Onam is the biggest festival of Kerala, celebrated over 10 days in the Malayalam month of Chingam (August–September). It is a harvest festival that also commemorates the annual visit of the legendary King Mahabali — the beloved asura king who once ruled Kerala in a golden age of prosperity and equality — to his people, as permitted by Lord Vamana (Vishnu). The festival is celebrated by Hindus, Christians, and Muslims alike as Kerala's cultural national festival. Highlights include the spectacular Vallam Kali (snake boat races), Pookkalam (flower carpet art), Onam Sadya (grand feast on banana leaf), and Thiruvathirakali dance.
