Dussehra (Vijayadashami)
Dussehra (Vijayadashami) falls on the tenth day of Navratri and celebrates two simultaneous victories: Lord Rama's defeat of the ten-headed demon king Ravana (symbolized by burning giant effigies of Ravana, Meghanada, and Kumbhakarna), and Goddess Durga's victory over Mahishasura. It is the most auspicious day to begin new ventures, buy vehicles, weapons, and tools (shastras). The word "Dussehra" means the defeat of the "ten evils."
