Grahan Dosha: Causes, Effects & Remedies
Also known as: Surya Grahan Dosha · Chandra Grahan Dosha · Eclipse Yoga · Grahan Yoga
Formation
Sun conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Surya Grahan Yoga) or Moon conjunct Rahu or Ketu (Chandra Grahan Yoga) within the same sign. The Sun-Rahu or Moon-Ketu combinations are considered more severe; Moon-Rahu and Sun-Ketu are also significant. Birth during an actual solar or lunar eclipse amplifies the dosha.
Overview
Grahan Dosha is formed when the luminaries — the Sun (Surya), representing the soul and father, and the Moon (Chandra), representing the mind and mother — are eclipsed by the shadow planets Rahu and Ketu in the birth chart. An eclipse in the sky is a moment when light is swallowed by shadow; the same astronomical metaphor applies natally when the Sun or Moon conjoin the nodes. The Sun's clarity, authority, and vital force are dimmed; the Moon's mental steadiness and emotional receptivity are disturbed. This dosha is particularly noted for its psychological dimension — the native may experience periods of confusion, identity obscurity, or emotional eclipses that mirror the astronomical phenomenon in their inner life. Birth during an actual eclipse is considered the most intense form. Significantly, the Pitra Dosha overlap (Sun-Rahu specifically) means these doshas often co-present and share remedies.
Effects on Life
- 01Diminished vitality, confidence, and self-expression — the Sun's royal clarity is occluded.
- 02Mental instability, mood swings, and periods of emotional confusion — Moon's equilibrium disrupted.
- 03Complicated relationship with the father (Sun affliction) or mother (Moon affliction).
- 04Eyes and vision may be affected — the Sun governs sight; chronic eye conditions are a classical indicator.
- 05Government, authority, or official recognition issues — the Sun rules status and public esteem.
- 06Psychic sensitivity and irrational fears, especially around eclipses and new/full moons — Moon-Rahu/Ketu heightens sensitivity beyond comfort.
Cancellations & Exceptions
Classical Jyotish provides specific rules under which Grahan Dosha does not form or is significantly mitigated. Check these before assuming the dosha is active.
- ✓Sun in Leo (its own sign) conjunct Rahu — the Sun's dignity in its own sign provides considerable resistance to the eclipse effect.
- ✓Moon in Taurus (exaltation) conjunct nodes — an exalted Moon maintains emotional stability even in Rahu or Ketu's company.
- ✓The combination in the 3rd, 6th, or 11th house reduces severity, as these houses convert even malefic energies productively.
- ✓Jupiter closely aspecting the afflicted Sun or Moon provides significant protective illumination that counteracts the eclipse effect.
- ✓Sun-Ketu conjunction is considered milder than Sun-Rahu because Ketu dissolves ego rather than inflaming it; this can even produce spiritual detachment.
- ✓Moon-Ketu conjunction in spiritually oriented charts often gives psychic gifts, meditative depth, and moksha orientation rather than the destabilisation seen with Moon-Rahu.
Classical Remedies
- 01Surya Namaskar — 12 rounds of sun salutation daily at sunrise, along with recitation of the Aditya Hridayam; directly addresses the eclipsed Sun.
- 02Surya Beej Mantra — "ॐ ह्रां ह्रीं ह्रौं सः सूर्याय नमः" 108 times at sunrise on Sundays, for 40 consecutive Sundays.
- 03For Moon affliction: Chandra Beej Mantra — "ॐ श्रां श्रीं श्रौं सः चंद्राय नमः" 108 times on Mondays; donate white items (rice, milk, white cloth, silver) on Mondays.
- 04Rahu-Ketu Shanti Puja at Sri Kalahasteeswara Temple or Trimbakeshwar — both sites are specifically consecrated for node-related doshas.
- 05Mahamrityunjaya Mantra — 108 repetitions daily; especially important if the native was born during an actual eclipse.
- 06Wearing a Ruby (Manikya) of 3-5 carats for Sun affliction (after careful consultation) or Pearl (Moti) for Moon affliction — set in gold, energised on Sunday or Monday respectively.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Grahan Dosha more severe if I was born during an actual eclipse?
Classically, yes. Birth during a solar or lunar eclipse is the most intense form of Grahan Dosha because the planetary configuration in the sky precisely matches the natal chart. Traditional texts recommend specific eclipse-birth remedies, including recitation of the Surya or Chandra Kavacham and annual eclipse-day rituals.
What is the difference between Grahan Dosha and Pitra Dosha?
They overlap significantly. Sun-Rahu conjunction is simultaneously Grahan Dosha (eclipse of the soul's light) and Pitra Dosha (ancestral debt through afflicted Sun). The remedies for Sun-Rahu address both. Moon-Rahu or Moon-Ketu conjunctions are purely Grahan Dosha and do not carry the Pitra Dosha ancestral debt dimension.
Can Grahan Dosha affect mental health?
Moon-Rahu conjunction in particular is classically associated with "Chandra-Rahu Grahan" and is linked to obsessive thinking, anxiety, and occasional irrational fears. This is not a psychiatric diagnosis but a description of how Rahu's amplification of the Moon's emotional receptivity can lead to overstimulation. Meditation, routine, and Moon-strengthening remedies specifically address this.
My Sun is conjunct Ketu, not Rahu. Is this also Grahan Dosha?
Yes. Sun-Ketu is Grahan Dosha but with a different flavour. Ketu dissolves rather than amplifies. The native may experience eclipse of ego (which can lead to spiritual evolution), difficulty asserting authority or identity, or a father who is spiritually inclined but physically or emotionally absent. Remedies focus on strengthening Sun's expression without inflaming ego.
Are there any positive sides to Grahan Dosha?
Moon-Ketu specifically can give extraordinary psychic sensitivity, meditative depth, and moksha orientation. Sun-Ketu can produce remarkable detachment from ego and a guru-like quality. Even Moon-Rahu, which is more challenging, gives unusual perceptive ability and artistic depth when channelled. The eclipse experience, natal or personal, has the quality of revealing what was previously unseen.
