Panchami Shradh — Day 5 of Pitru Paksha (Kunwara Panchami)

Last reviewed: April 2026

Panchami Shradh (पंचमी श्राद्ध), known as Kunwara Panchami (कुँवारा पंचमी), is the day 5 shradh of Pitru Paksha — specifically for unmarried ancestors and for those who died on panchami tithi.

Garuda Purana, Nirnaya Sindhu, Dharmasindhu, and folk-ritual Smriti traditions.

On Kunwara Panchami, some families light an extra ghee lamp for unmarried departed ancestors — the lamp represents the light of the lineage continuing.

An offering of flowers (particularly white or yellow) is made for unmarried ancestors — a symbolic gesture of "the wedding that never happened" being honored.

A separate tarpan is offered specifically for those who died in childhood or before marriage — "bala-tarpan." This tarpan uses only water and milk, no sesame.

The Brahmin bhojan includes a sweet dish (kheer with dry fruits) in honor of the unmarried ancestors — their share of life's sweetness offered posthumously.

In some North Indian communities, a small piece of new cloth (a symbolic bridal item) is offered and later given to a young unmarried person in charity.

Pindas are immersed with a final prayer: "May those who left unmarried find peace; may they be reborn into families that love them."

North Indian Tradition

Kunwara Panchami is especially observed in UP and Bihar — distinct pinda offerings for unmarried ancestors are the hallmark.

South Indian Tradition

In South Indian tradition, Panchami Shradh is observed but the specific "kunwara pinda" practice is less common.

Bengali Tradition

Bengali tradition does not emphasize Kunwara Panchami separately; Mahalaya tarpan covers all.

Gujarati Tradition

Gujarati families often do a specific Gauri puja on Panchami before the pitru rite.

The Thing Nobody Else Says

Kunwara Panchami is the only pitru rite that explicitly addresses ancestors who died unmarried — a category often overlooked in standard shradh which focuses on householders.

Garuda Purana (Pretakalpa 14.6) mentions that souls who died without completing the grihastha ashrama require specific offerings to proceed on their journey — and Panchami is the tithi ordained for this purpose in later Smriti tradition.

pañcamyāṃ śrāddhamuddiṣṭaṃ kumārāṇāṃ viśeṣataḥ। avivāhitāḥ ye pretā teṣāmuddharaṇāya ca॥

On the panchami tithi, shradh is specially ordained for unmarried ancestors — for the liberation of those who departed unmarried.

Dharmasindhu, Shraddha Prakarana

What if the ancestor was married but we still want to observe Kunwara Panchami?

Panchami Shradh is still performed for any ancestor whose death tithi was panchami, married or not. The "kunwara pinda" is only added if the ancestor was unmarried.

Can I combine this with a Gauri puja?

Yes. Traditional pandits often recommend a brief Gauri invocation before the pitru rite on Panchami.

What is Kunwara Panchami?

The panchami tithi of Pitru Paksha, specifically observed for unmarried ancestors. (Hindi:

Is a separate pinda needed for unmarried ancestors?

Yes, traditionally a "kunwara pinda" of sweet saffron rice is offered in addition to the regular pindas.

What if we have no unmarried ancestors to honor?

Then the rite is performed as standard Panchami Shradh for ancestors who died on panchami tithi.

Which mantras are recited?

Pitru Gayatri, Pind Daan mantra, and a specific bala-tarpan mantra for unmarried young ancestors if applicable.

Does this day carry social meaning?

Yes, it acknowledges a category of ancestors often neglected and honors them in the family lineage. (Hindi:
