अष्टमी श्राद्ध
Last reviewed: April 2026
Ashtami Shradh (अष्टमी श्राद्ध) on day 8 of Pitru Paksha is for ancestors whose death tithi was ashtami. Sometimes called Kalashtami when Kala Bhairava worship is added. अष्टमी तिथि पर मृत पितरों के लिए श्राद्ध।
The Practice
Eight pindas are offered in some traditions — reflecting the tithi number — with the extra pindas for great-great-grandfather up to eighth-generation ancestor.
A specific offering of black sesame laddu is made.
Bhairava invocation with the mantra: "ॐ कालभैरवाय नमः" — to ensure no ritual obstacles.
The Brahmin is offered a black cloth in some traditions along with the usual vastra — acknowledging the Bhairava connection.
Pinda visarjan at dusk in a flowing river or well.

Bengali families strongly associate Ashtami with Durga; in Pitru Paksha the Mahalaya tarpan takes precedence.

The Thing Nobody Else Says
Ashtami Shradh is traditionally considered the tithi to address ancestors who died by unnatural causes — accidents, violence, suicide — where regular shradh may not fully release the soul.
Garuda Purana (Pretakalpa, 15.4) notes that souls who departed via accidents or violence benefit especially from rites performed on Ashtami, due to the tithi's association with Kala Bhairava who is the deity overseeing such unresolved passages.

What If —

Ashtami Shradh is specifically suited for such cases. Add a Bhairava invocation and perform the rite with full sincerity. Some families also visit a Bhairava temple on this day.
Can women participate in Ashtami Shradh?
Yes. All shradh rites include women, and Ashtami is no exception. Menstruating members rest from active participation only.
