Navagraha Remedies: The Complete Classical Reference for All Nine Planets

The Navagraha — nine planetary bodies (Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu) — each have a complete system of material and ritual correspondences described in classical texts including BPHS (Chapters on Upaaya), Muhurta Chintamani, and the standalone Ratna Shastra texts (Agastya Ratna Pariksha, Mani Mala). These correspondences — day, color, gemstone, mantra, metal, donation item, and presiding deity — form the basis of classical planetary remediation. This reference compiles those correspondences with the critical qualification that gemstones must never be worn without proper natal chart analysis. The remaining remedies (mantra, fasting, donation, color) are generally safe for all Lagnas and do not carry the amplification risks of gemstones.

Quick Answer

Complete Navagraha remedy reference: Sun (ruby/Sunday/red/Surya), Moon (pearl/Monday/white/Chandra), Mars (red coral/Tuesday/red/Kartikeya), Mercury (emerald/Wednesday/green/Budha), Jupiter (yellow sapphire/Thursday/yellow/Guru), Venus (diamond/Friday/white/Shukra), Saturn (blue sapphire/Saturday/black-blue/Shani), Rahu (hessonite/Saturday/smoke/Durga), Ketu (cat's eye/Tuesday/variegated/Ganesha). Never wear gemstones without chart analysis — mantras and donations are safe for all Lagnas.

Sun (Surya)

Day: Sunday. Color: Red, orange, saffron. Deity: Vishnu (as Aditya), Shiva as Suryanarayan in some traditions. Metal: Gold. Donation: Wheat, jaggery, copper vessel, red cloth, given to a Brahmin on Sunday. Mantra: "Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah" — 7,000 japa. Simple: "Om Suryaya Namah" (108 times at sunrise).

Gemstone: Ruby (Manikya — red corundum, minimum 3 carats, unheated). Prescription conditions: Sun as Lagna lord (Simha Lagna), 5th lord (Mesha or Dhanu Lagna — debated), or 9th lord. MOST appropriate during Sun Mahadasha. Substitute: Red garnet (Tamra Mani) — less potent, carries fewer risks. Avoid ruby for Vrishabha, Tula, Makara, and Kumbha Lagna where Sun rules 4th, 6th, 7th, or 8th.

Surya Arghya (water offering at sunrise) is the most universally safe Sun remedy — it does not amplify harmful house lordships, it simply strengthens the Sun principle (vitality, clarity, authority, father relationship) through consistent practice.

Moon (Chandra)

Day: Monday. Color: White, silver, cream. Deity: Shiva (as Chandrashekhar), Parvati as the Moon's consort principle. Metal: Silver. Donation: White rice, milk, white cloth, silver, offered on Monday. Mantra: "Om Shraam Shreem Shraum Sah Chandraya Namah" — 11,000 japa. Simple: "Om Chandraya Namah."

Gemstone: Natural pearl (Moti — saltwater, not freshwater, minimum 5 carats). Prescription conditions: Moon as Lagna lord (Karka Lagna), 5th lord (Meena or Vrishchika Lagna), or when Moon is severely afflicted and Moon Mahadasha is running. Pearl is relatively safe but should be avoided when Moon is combust (too close to Sun) — a combust Moon's pearl amplifies the combustion rather than strengthening Moon. Substitute: White moonstone (carries ~30% of pearl's potency).

Consistent Monday fasting (Somvara Vrat) with milk-based breaking of fast is the most broadly beneficial Moon remedy — it strengthens emotional steadiness, relationship with the mother, and mental peace.

Mars (Mangala)

Day: Tuesday. Color: Red, coral-red, blood-red. Deity: Kartikeya (Murugan in South Indian tradition), Hanuman (Mars's energy in the devotional tradition). Metal: Copper. Donation: Red lentils (masoor dal), jaggery, copper, red cloth, on Tuesday. Mantra: "Om Kraam Kreem Kraum Sah Bhaumaya Namah" — 10,000 japa.

Gemstone: Red coral (Praval/Moonga — Mediterranean origin preferred, minimum 5–6 carats). Prescription conditions: Mars as Lagna lord (Mesha or Vrishchika Lagna), 5th lord (Simha or Karka Lagna — especially Simha Lagna where Mars rules 4th and 9th, making it yogakaraka-adjacent), or 9th lord. Yogakaraka for Karka Lagna (4th and 9th lord) — red coral highly recommended during Mars Mahadasha for Karka Lagna. AVOID red coral for Vrishabha and Tula Lagna (Mars rules 7th and 12th for Vrishabha, 2nd and 7th for Tula — Maraka houses). Red coral in these Lagnas can worsen health and relationship outcomes. Substitute: Carnelian (Tamra Mani variants) — widely available but much weaker.

Mercury (Budha)

Day: Wednesday. Color: Green, emerald-green. Deity: Vishnu as Budha, Maha Ganapati (intellect deity). Metal: Bronze, white gold. Donation: Green dal (moong), green vegetables, books, on Wednesday. Mantra: "Om Braam Breem Braum Sah Budhaya Namah" — 9,000 japa.

Gemstone: Emerald (Panna — Colombian preferred, minimum 3 carats, unheated). Prescription conditions: Mercury as Lagna lord (Mithuna or Kanya Lagna), 5th lord (Kumbha Lagna or Vrishabha Lagna), or when Mercury is severely combust or debilitated and Mercury Mahadasha creates significant communication/business difficulties. Substitute: Green tourmaline or peridot (Haritamani) — more affordable, carries approximately 25–30% of emerald's potency. Avoid emerald for Vrishchika Lagna where Mercury rules 8th and 11th — the 8th lordship makes emerald potentially harmful.

Jupiter (Guru/Brihaspati)

Day: Thursday. Color: Yellow, gold. Deity: Dakshinamurti (Shiva as the teaching form), Brihaspati as the divine priest. Metal: Gold. Donation: Chana dal, yellow cloth, turmeric, bananas, offered to Brahmins on Thursday. Mantra: "Om Graam Greem Graum Sah Gurave Namah" — 19,000 japa.

Gemstone: Yellow sapphire (Pukhraj — Sri Lankan, minimum 3–4 carats, unheated). Substitute: Yellow topaz (Sunela) — widely available, approximately 30–40% potency. See the dedicated Jupiter remedies article for complete prescription conditions. Key principle: safe for most Lagnas except where Jupiter rules malefic houses (Vrishabha: 8th and 11th lord; Tula: 3rd and 6th lord — avoid yellow sapphire for these Lagnas).

Venus (Shukra)

Day: Friday. Color: White, cream, pink. Deity: Lakshmi, Saraswati in some traditions (as the arts are Venus's domain). Metal: Silver, platinum. Donation: White sugar, ghee, white sweets, white cloth, on Friday. Mantra: "Om Draam Dreem Draum Sah Shukraya Namah" — 16,000 japa.

Gemstone: Diamond (Heera, minimum 0.5 carat — even small diamonds carry significant potency). Substitute: White sapphire (Safed Pukhraj, minimum 3 carats) or white zircon. Prescription conditions: Vrishabha or Tula Lagna (Venus as Lagna lord). Avoid diamond for Mesha and Vrishchika Lagna (Venus as Maraka 2nd/7th lord for Mesha, 7th/12th lord for Vrishchika).

Saturn (Shani)

Day: Saturday. Color: Dark blue, black, violet, indigo. Deity: Shani (direct), Yama (as the karmic justice parallel), Hanuman (for protection from Saturn's harsher expressions). Metal: Iron, steel, lead (though iron jewelry is unusual). Donation: Sesame oil, black sesame, black urad, iron vessel, dark blue cloth, mustard, on Saturday. Mantra: "Om Praam Preem Praum Sah Shanaye Namah" — 23,000 japa.

Gemstone: Blue sapphire (Neelam — Ceylon/Sri Lankan preferred, minimum 3 carats, unheated). Substitute: Amethyst (Kathela) — available widely, approximately 20–25% potency, much safer trial option. See the full Sade Sati article for complete blue sapphire conditions. Never wear blue sapphire without a 3-day trial period first.

Rahu and Ketu

Rahu — Day: Saturday (shared with Saturn, with whom Rahu shares affinity). Color: Smoke-grey, black, dark multicolor. Deity: Durga, Kali, Bhairava. Metal: Lead, mixed metals (Panchadhatu). Donation: Radish, black urad, coal, black sesame on Saturday. Mantra: "Om Bhraam Bhreem Bhraum Sah Rahave Namah" — 18,000 japa. Gemstone: Hessonite garnet (Gomed — deep orange-brown variety, minimum 5 carats). Strict conditions: Rahu functionally benefic for Lagna AND Rahu Mahadasha running.

Ketu — Day: Tuesday (shared with Mars, to whom Ketu is similar in classical nature). Color: Multi-spotted, smoke, variegated, brown. Deity: Ganesha (Ketu's deity in several classical sources — the headless severed principle finding resolution in Ganesha's new elephant head), also Chitragupta. Donation: Sesame, blankets, multi-colored cloth on Tuesday. Mantra: "Om Sraam Sreem Sraum Sah Ketave Namah" — 17,000 japa. Gemstone: Cat's eye (Vaidurya/Lahsuniya — chrysoberyl, minimum 4 carats). Strict conditions: Ketu functionally benefic AND Ketu Mahadasha running. Cat's eye is the second-most dangerous gemstone after blue sapphire — never wear without thorough chart analysis.

The Critical Gemstone Warning

Every gemstone in the Navagraha system amplifies the planetary principle it represents. This amplification is bidirectional — it strengthens both the auspicious and inauspicious manifestations of that planet in the chart. A planet that rules a malefic house for a given Lagna (6th, 8th, or 12th lord) should generally not be strengthened through gemstones. The mantra, fasting, donation, and color remedies strengthen the principle without creating the concentrated channel of amplification that a gemstone creates — which is why these practices are safe for all Lagnas without individualized analysis.

Gemstone prescription requires: knowledge of the native's Lagna, knowledge of each planet's house lordship for that Lagna, assessment of the planet's natal strength and dignity, assessment of the current Mahadasha/Antardasha, and ideally a trial period before permanent wearing. Any astrologer who prescribes gemstones without these five elements is performing gemstone retail, not Jyotish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can multiple gemstones be worn simultaneously?

Classical texts are cautious about combining gemstones. Natural enemies in the planetary system should not be worn together — Sun and Saturn (enemies), Moon and Saturn, Sun and Venus, Moon and Rahu. Compatible combinations: Sun+Moon+Jupiter (mutual friends), Venus+Mercury+Saturn (generally compatible), Jupiter+Moon+Mercury (friendly). When in doubt, wear one planet's gemstone at a time and observe for a month before adding another.

How long should gemstones be worn?

Classical texts prescribe gemstones for the duration of the relevant Mahadasha or Antardasha. After the planetary period ends, continued wearing may be appropriate if the planet remains friendly for the Lagna, but this should be reassessed. Wearing gemstones indefinitely without reassessment is not classically prescribed.

Are synthetic gemstones effective?

Classical Ratna Shastra prescribes natural minerals specifically — the crystal structure, mineral composition, and natural formation process are considered essential to the gemstone's energetic properties. Laboratory-created stones (synthetic rubies, synthetic emeralds) have the same chemical composition but different energetic properties according to classical texts. Most traditional Jyotish practitioners do not recommend synthetic stones for remedy purposes.
