Sun (Surya)

Gemstone: Natural pearl (Moti — saltwater, not freshwater, minimum 5 carats). Prescription conditions: Moon as Lagna lord (Karka Lagna), 5th lord (Meena or Vrishchika Lagna), or when Moon is severely afflicted and Moon Mahadasha is running. The Critical Gemstone Warning
Every gemstone in the Navagraha system amplifies the planetary principle it represents. This amplification is bidirectional — it strengthens both the auspicious and inauspicious manifestations of that planet in the chart. A planet that rules a malefic house for a given Lagna (6th, 8th, or 12th lord) should generally not be strengthened through gemstones. The mantra, fasting, donation, and color remedies strengthen the principle without creating the concentrated channel of amplification that a gemstone creates — which is why these practices are safe for all Lagnas without individualized analysis.
Gemstone prescription requires: knowledge of the native's Lagna, knowledge of each planet's house lordship for that Lagna, assessment of the planet's natal strength and dignity, assessment of the current Mahadasha/Antardasha, and ideally a trial period before permanent wearing. Any astrologer who prescribes gemstones without these five elements is performing gemstone retail, not Jyotish.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can multiple gemstones be worn simultaneously?
Classical texts are cautious about combining gemstones. Natural enemies in the planetary system should not be worn together — Sun and Saturn (enemies), Moon and Saturn, Sun and Venus, Moon and Rahu. Compatible combinations: Sun+Moon+Jupiter (mutual friends), Venus+Mercury+Saturn (generally compatible), Jupiter+Moon+Mercury (friendly). When in doubt, wear one planet's gemstone at a time and observe for a month before adding another.
How long should gemstones be worn?
Classical texts prescribe gemstones for the duration of the relevant Mahadasha or Antardasha. After the planetary period ends, continued wearing may be appropriate if the planet remains friendly for the Lagna, but this should be reassessed. Wearing gemstones indefinitely without reassessment is not classically prescribed.
Are synthetic gemstones effective?
Classical Ratna Shastra prescribes natural minerals specifically — the crystal structure, mineral composition, and natural formation process are considered essential to the gemstone's energetic properties. Laboratory-created stones (synthetic rubies, synthetic emeralds) have the same chemical composition but different energetic properties according to classical texts. Most traditional Jyotish practitioners do not recommend synthetic stones for remedy purposes.
